Russia's Influence on Democracy: Cryptocurrencies and Voting System Manipulation
Concerns about foreign interference in democratic processes are on the rise, particularly regarding Russia's activities. Cllr Duncan Crow, a SussexWorld contributor, warns that our democracy is vulnerable to malign influences.
The issue of hostile state actors manipulating social media and undermining institutions is well-documented. One notable example is the US presidential elections, where Russian sources allegedly manipulated social media with some degree of success.
Crow highlights Nathan Gill's case, the former leader of Reform UK in Wales, who was sentenced to 10.5 years in prison for taking Russian bribes. What's more striking is that Gill was on his way to a cryptocurrency conference in Moscow when he was arrested, and his planned speech suggested a connection between cryptocurrencies and voting systems.
Crow expresses suspicion towards individuals who have made fortunes from cryptocurrencies, pointing out the bad reputation they often carry. He also draws attention to two billionaires who donated £36 million each to Reform UK, with one of them being under parliamentary investigation for a £5 million gift.
