Russia's Sberbank Expands Crypto Lending with Ethereum and USDT Support
Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, is expanding its crypto-lending services to include Ethereum and USDT (Tether) as collateral, in addition to Bitcoin. This move comes after the Bank of Russia approved new regulations that will allow banks to provide loans against digital assets. Deputy Chairman Anatoly Popov stated that the bank already has experience working with cryptocurrencies and is prepared to adopt the new rules.
The plan involves borrowers borrowing funds without having to sell their digital assets, giving institutional or corporate clients a way to access liquidity without losing market exposure. This development is part of a broader trend in mainstreaming cryptocurrencies within the financial sector, with banks exploring various use cases such as collateral loans and settlement services.
Sberbank's decision to include Ethereum and USDT as eligible collateral assets is significant, given their popularity and stability compared to other cryptocurrencies. Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, while USDT is the most widely used stablecoin globally.
