Russia's Sberbank Paves Way for Crypto-Backed Lending with New Regulations
Sberbank, Russia's largest financial institution, is taking a significant step towards integrating cryptocurrencies into traditional banking services. According to new regulations from the Central Bank of Russia, set to take effect on September 1, Sberbank will accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether as eligible collateral for loans.
The move marks a major shift in Russia's approach to digital assets, which were previously largely unaddressed or restricted. The new rules provide a legal basis for banks to accept cryptocurrencies as collateral, opening the door for mainstream financial institutions to integrate crypto assets into traditional banking services.
Sberbank's initiative is not limited to lending alone. The bank also plans to introduce a crypto wallet and digital custody service within the year, further bridging the gap between conventional finance and the crypto economy.
