RWA DeFi Deposits Hit Near $4 Billion Amid Growing Adoption
Real World Assets (RWAs) in DeFi protocols have reached near $4 billion in deposits, a significant growth from just one year ago. According to DefiLlama data as of August 18, RWA DeFi deposits stand at $3.98 billion, up from $650.88 million a year prior and around $12 million three years ago.
This marks a staggering 6x growth in twelve months and an over 300x increase in three years. What's notable is that DefiLlama only counts tokenized assets when they are actively used onchain, such as collateral posted in lending markets or liquidity provided to decentralized exchange (DEX) pools.
Tokenized Treasuries, led by BlackRock's BUIDL and Franklin Templeton's BENJI product, account for a significant portion of the total RWA space but have low utilization rates. For instance, BUIDL has $2.74 billion issued, with only around $18 million being used in DeFi, representing a utilization rate of 0.66%.
However, private credit and reinsurance are where the collateral actually moves, with private credit accounting for over half ($2.13 billion) of the active total. Bonds contribute $799.88 million, while reinsurance adds another $406.45 million. Notably, Janus Henderson's Anemoy AAA CLO fund runs at 97.53% utilization on $421.88 million.
The question now is whether future issuance will follow a similar pattern as BUIDL or lead to increased utilization rates, potentially turning RWAs into working collateral within crypto credit markets.
