S&P Pantera Index Revolutionizes Altcoin Selection with Focus on Utility
A new index is emerging that puts real utility at its core, shifting the focus from market capitalization to measurable usage and revenue. The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, created through a partnership between S&P Global and crypto venture firm Pantera Capital, is expected to contain 18 altcoins.
The selection process began with 4,500 crypto assets listed on major exchanges, narrowing it down to projects that have generated at least $500 million in revenue over two consecutive quarters. The top 30 revenue-generating projects will be evaluated further based on factors such as active users, transaction activity, and the extent to which value is returned to token holders.
The index has already identified six altcoins: Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Hyperliquid, BNB, and Aave. The focus on productive crypto assets with real-world use cases could lead to a more utility-driven market cycle, where measurable fundamentals play a greater role in determining which altcoins survive and gain adoption.
The changing U.S. regulatory environment, particularly the CLARITY Act, could further accelerate this shift by allowing institutional capital to enter the sector through ETFs and digital asset treasury vehicles.
