S&P Pantera Index Revolutionizes Crypto Market with Utility-Driven Approach
A new index created by S&P Global and Pantera Capital is shifting the focus in the cryptocurrency market from market capitalization to real utility.
The S&P Pantera Index will contain 18 altcoins, with six already identified: Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Hyperliquid, BNB, and Aave. The selection process narrowed down from 4,500 crypto assets listed on major exchanges, applying a minimum market capitalization of $500 million and assessing revenue generated over two consecutive quarters.
The key concept behind the framework is value accrual, which takes into account not just revenue but also active users, transaction activity, speed, practical use cases, and the extent to which value is returned to token holders. This shift could be accelerated by changing U.S. regulatory environment, particularly if the CLARITY Act is passed.
As a result, institutional capital may increasingly enter the sector through ETFs and digital asset treasury vehicles, making it possible for a wider institutional allocation toward crypto. Solana has been highlighted as a strong example of an asset that institutions could favor due to its daily active users, revenue generation, and high transaction throughput.
The broader message is that the altcoin market could become increasingly divided between projects with genuine economic activity and tokens driven primarily by speculation. Projects unable to demonstrate real usage, sustainable revenue, and value for token holders could struggle to attract institutional capital.
