Salvadoran Bitcoin Stash Hits Record 7,762 BTC
El Salvador's bitcoin stash has grown to 7,762 BTC, making it one of the largest disclosed sovereign holders in the world. This is the result of a consistent policy implemented by President Nayib Bukele since 2021, where the government purchases one bitcoin per day regardless of its price.
The accumulation of coins continued despite a $1.4 billion IMF financing agreement that asked El Salvador to confine public-sector bitcoin purchases and make merchant acceptance voluntary. The government's reserve-buying policy was not part of the rollback tied to the IMF deal, and Bukele has been clear about why it remains intact: as a long-term position.
At bitcoin's current price near $77,000, El Salvador's stack is worth approximately $598 million. This daily fluctuation in value is precisely what Bukele aims for with his dollar-cost averaging strategy, betting that the coin count matters more than the current price tag.
