Salvadoran Government Holds 7,762 BTC Amid IMF Concerns
The government of El Salvador has been accumulating Bitcoin in its treasury as part of its digital asset strategy. As of September 2026, the office reported holding 7,762 BTC valued at $620 million.
This number represents a significant increase from December 2024 when the baseline was 5,968 BTC. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) initially expressed concerns over the government's accumulation of Bitcoin, citing the prohibition on voluntary public-sector accumulation under its $1.4 billion IMF program.
The government explained that the recent increases in the treasury came from private donations, addressing the IMF's concerns. However, blockchain forensics firm Arkham Intelligence tracked only 7,264 BTC in government-associated addresses, creating a discrepancy of around 500 coins.
