Samsung Brings Stablecoins to Mobile Wallet in Ambitious Expansion
Samsung is planning to add native stablecoin support to its mobile wallet, which would bring cryptocurrency-based payments to around 800 million users. This move would be a significant milestone for digital assets and could happen sooner rather than later.
The integration of stablecoins into Samsung Wallet is part of the company's broader initiative to expand its ecosystem through financial services. Recently, Samsung unveiled plans to enter the US credit card market with the Samsung Galaxy Card, which will be issued by Barclays and operate on Visa's network. The company also added buy now, pay later financing to its mobile wallet last year through a partnership with Splitit.
The stablecoin integration could be transformative for consumers, offering near-instant, low-cost, and transparent payments that can improve use cases such as cross-border payments. However, one of the biggest obstacles to broader stablecoin use is merchant acceptance, with many users still struggling to find businesses that accept them as payment.
Samsung's integration could help address this challenge by putting stablecoins front and center on hundreds of millions of Android devices, potentially encouraging greater merchant acceptance of this efficient payment alternative. Analyst Joel Hugentobler notes that 'the biggest hurdle for stablecoins hasn't been technology, it has been distribution.' By integrating stablecoins into a wallet already used by millions of people, Samsung could make it much easier for the average user to hold, send, or spend stablecoins.
