Samsung Enters Crypto Space with Stablecoin Support
Samsung has made its move into the crypto space by supporting stablecoins in its Samsung Wallet. This development is significant, especially for the Philippines where Samsung is a leading consumer phone brand with NFC support.
Stablecoins are considered safer than traditional cryptocurrencies as they are backed 1:1 by real-world assets. For example, USDT has a market cap of over $1.84 billion and is backed by Tether with a 1:1 ratio.
In the Philippines, local banks have partnered with Google's Tap to Pay feature on Google Wallet, limiting Samsung Wallet's features. However, this presents an opportunity for licensed VASP operators such as GCrypto, Maya, GoTyme, and Coins PH to widen their crypto onboarding.
While there are currently less than 15 licensed VASP operators in the country, Samsung's support for stablecoins may encourage more banks and financial institutions to acquire a VASP license. This could lead to increased adoption of cryptocurrencies in the Philippines.
