Samsung Touts Stablecoin Support in Wallet App, Launches New Credit Card
Samsung has announced that its wallet app will soon support stablecoins, which are digital tokens pegged to the value of traditional currencies. The company confirmed this at an event in London on July 22, where it also launched a new credit card called the Samsung Galaxy Card.
The Samsung Wallet will be able to hold dollar-pegged tokens, and with hundreds of millions of phones shipped every year, the potential reach is vast. However, despite the significance of this announcement, Samsung was coy on the details, refusing to name any specific stablecoin issuers or confirm a launch date.
The company did show a mockup with Circle's USDC on stage, but declined to confirm if it will be a partner. The lack of clarity on custody models and supported blockchains has raised questions about how users will interact with their stablecoins through the app.
Despite this uncertainty, the announcement is seen as a significant step forward for mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies. Stablecoins have historically been a gateway to more speculative assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, and having them integrated into a widely used wallet app could bring in new users.
