Samsung Unveils Plan to Bring Stablecoin Support to 240 Million Phones
Samsung has announced its intention to integrate native stablecoin support into its Samsung Wallet app, which will be available on over 240 million phones worldwide. This move marks a significant step towards mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies, particularly stablecoins, which are pegged to the value of traditional currencies like the US dollar.
The company confirmed this development at Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22 and showcased a mockup with Circle's USDC. However, Samsung declined to name any specific stablecoin issuers as partners or provide details on the launch date, supported blockchains, eligible countries, or custody model.
Despite the lack of specifics, this move is significant because it has the potential to make stablecoins more accessible and user-friendly for a large audience. Stablecoins are often seen as a stepping stone towards more advanced cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as they provide a more stable store of value and facilitate easier transactions.
The announcement also highlights Samsung's ambition to turn its Wallet app into a full-fledged financial hub, allowing users to manage their finances, send money, and make payments seamlessly. The company has already launched the Samsung Galaxy Card, a credit card issued by Barclays and running on the Visa network, which offers rewards for purchases made through Samsung's ecosystem.
