SAND Bridge Exploit: Over 339 Trillion Worth of Tokens Frozen
A recent exploit on The Sandbox's bridge contracts left many SAND holders with frozen tokens. On August 21, an attacker took advantage of a configuration flaw in the SAND contracts on Base and BNB Smart Chain, issuing unbacked tokens worth over 339 trillion SAND across both chains.
The actual damage was much lower, however, at around $700,000 worth of SAND drained from Ethereum. The attack had no impact on SAND holders with their tokens directly on Ethereum or Polygon.
The operator has permanently shut down the affected contracts and will not reopen them. Any later bridging of SAND will run through newly deployed contracts at different addresses.
