Sandbox Bridge Hacked: Attackers Create Unbacked SAND Tokens
The Sandbox metaverse project announced on August 22 that its cross-chain bridge on Base and BNB Smart Chain had been attacked, resulting in the creation of unbacked SAND tokens.
The studio behind The Sandbox stated that a vulnerability in the bridge was exploited, allowing attackers to issue SAND with no locked reserve behind it on Ethereum. According to the studio, the impact amounts to less than 0.01 percent of the total SAND supply, which is three billion tokens.
The studio identified and contained the vulnerability, but bridging to Base and BNB Smart Chain has been halted since the attack. Holdings on Ethereum and Polygon are not affected, according to the studio.
