Sandbox Halted SAND Transfers Amid Bridge Vulnerability Exploitation
The Sandbox has suspended SAND token transfer functions on Base and BNB Smart Chain (BSC) due to a vulnerability in its cross-chain bridge. The company confirmed that an attacker exploited the weakness to mint additional tokens without collateral, affecting less than 0.01% of the total SAND supply.
According to blockchain security firm PeckShield, over 14.9 billion SAND were minted across two addresses, roughly five times the normal total supply. However, it is unclear if these tokens have moved through bridges or decentralized exchanges.
The Sandbox stated that no user wallet compromise has been identified and that Ethereum- and Polygon-based SAND are unaffected by the issue. Nevertheless, the liquidity halt on Base and BSC imposes trading restrictions on users and liquidity providers on those networks.
