The Sandbox is rebooting its vision around AI, with CEO Robby Yung at the helm. After three years of development, the company's new AI-centric toolset, Sandbox Studio, is nearing a public launch in October.

Sandbox Studio is designed for experienced developers familiar with engines like Unity and Unreal, unlike The Sandbox's original Game Maker tools that were no-code but limited what professional studios could create. According to Yung, these limitations 'actually acted as a constraint' for actual game developers.

The new toolset aims to remove those constraints while automating repetitive work such as debugging, testing, and content updates. This will give developers more time to focus on game design, storytelling, and other creative decisions.

Yung expects this shift to support much smaller development teams. He cites a conversation with Fenris Creations CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, suggesting that even serious game studios may soon have no reason to employ more than 30 people.
