Sandbox Token Hit by 'Infinite Mint' Attack Amid Base Network Activity
The Sandbox's SAND token has been hit by allegations of an 'infinite mint' attack after more than 500 million tokens were minted on Base.
This large-scale minting would equal about 16.7% of the maximum supply of 3 billion tokens, raising concerns about value dilution and heavy selling pressure.
The incident was detected on August 21 in the SAND smart contract on Base, with industry participants initially identifying over 500 million newly minted tokens.
If confirmed, this would be a major issue for The Sandbox, as an infinite mint attack exploits weaknesses in smart-contract permission controls or token issuance structures, allowing an attacker to create tokens at will and potentially dilute the value of existing holdings.
