Santander Takes the Leap with $4.3M Investment in US Spot Bitcoin ETFs
Banco Santander, Spain's largest bank, has made a significant move into cryptocurrency by holding approximately $4.3 million in US spot Bitcoin ETFs.
This investment is notable given the bank's massive asset management of over $1 trillion and its relatively modest size compared to other institutions.
Santander's interest in crypto is not new, with CEO Ana Botín making public statements about Bitcoin products since 2021. The bank has been developing crypto custody and digital asset services across Europe for years, including a recent expansion of crypto trading services through its digital subsidiary, Openbank, to clients in Germany.
This investment comes at a time when institutional crypto adoption is accelerating in Europe, with new regulations like MiCA becoming clearer. Santander appears to be strengthening its position in this area.
