Saudi Arabia's Humain Leverages Chinese Tech for Arabic-Language AI Breakthrough
Saudi Arabia's state-backed AI company Humain has announced the release of its HUMAIN M3 model, touted as the backbone of a national AI platform. However, what initially seemed like a breakthrough was later revealed to be built on top of open weights from Chinese AI firm MiniMax.
The HUMAIN M3 model uses a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture and has been fine-tuned with over 1 trillion Arabic tokens. It achieved an impressive average score of 89.37% across seven Arabic benchmark tests, making it one of the top-performing Arabic-language models available.
The decision to build on MiniMax's architecture marks a strategic shift for Humain, which had previously promoted its ALLAM 34B model as its flagship Arabic AI system. Rather than developing a base model from scratch, Humain opted to leverage existing technology and adapt it for Arabic use cases.
