Saylor Declares 'Bitcoin Advances' as CLARITY Act Hits Roadblock
Michael Saylor, co-founder and executive chairman of MicroStrategy, posted a sharp message on X on July 29, 2023. The four-line statement was direct and to the point: 'Governments can accelerate Bitcoin adoption. Governments can delay Bitcoin adoption. They cannot stop Bitcoin. Block by block. Nation by nation. Bitcoin advances.'
The timing of Saylor's post was deliberate. It landed as the CLARITY Act, a significant piece of crypto legislation moving through U.S. Congress, stalled in the Senate ahead of the August recess.
The CLARITY Act aims to provide regulatory clarity for digital assets and has been supported by major institutions including BlackRock, Fidelity, and Goldman Sachs. However, seven Democratic senators blocked the bill from reaching the 60-vote threshold needed to clear the floor, citing insufficient ethics safeguards. A vote has been pushed to September at the earliest.
Saylor's statement comes as a reminder of his company's significant investment in Bitcoin. MicroStrategy has accumulated 843,775 BTC, purchased at an average price of approximately $75,476 per coin. The company's stock, MSTR, is widely tracked by institutional investors as a proxy for Bitcoin exposure.
