Saylor Sees Digital Credit as Next Big Finance Opportunity
Michael Saylor, co-founder and executive chairman of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), believes digital credit has the potential to become the next billion-dollar finance opportunity. In a recent post on X, Saylor suggested that entrepreneurs and investors explore this niche, as he thinks it could offer faster settlement, global access, and transparent terms compared to traditional banking.
Digital credit is a lending and borrowing system built on blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. Unlike traditional credit, which relies on centralized banks and credit bureaus, digital credit uses smart contracts to automate lending, collateralization, and repayment.
Saylor's comment comes amid growing interest in tokenized assets and on-chain finance. Major financial institutions have begun exploring blockchain-based lending, and the total value locked in DeFi protocols has fluctuated between $50 billion and $100 billion over the past year. This shift towards digital credit is also reflected in the increased usage of platforms like Aave and Compound.
The global credit market is worth trillions of dollars, and even a small shift toward digital credit could create significant opportunities. However, issues such as collateral volatility, liquidation risks, and legal enforceability remain unresolved.
