Saylor's Credibility Under Fire as Strategy Shifts to Bitcoin Monetization

Michael Saylor's pledge to keep buying Bitcoin indefinitely has come under scrutiny from financial commentator Chris Irons, who accused him of shifting his narrative as Strategy Executive Chairman. The company had been a net buyer of Bitcoin but recently became a net seller under its newly announced 'Bitcoin monetization strategy'.

Irons pointed out that Saylor had claimed in the past that Strategy would be buying every quarter forever, but now this is no longer true. He also noted that Saylor had scaled back public references to the company's 'Bitcoin yield' metric, which was once touted repeatedly by Saylor and President Phong Le.

The 'Bitcoin yield' metric began to decline over the past month, and Irons suggested that management teams often change their narrative when it no longer works for them. He also pointed out that Saylor had reportedly cashed out roughly $370 million in 2024 by selling MSTR shares facilitated by a pre-arranged stock sale agreement.

However, investor Lawrence Lepard defended Saylor's stock sales, arguing that critics were overlooking the scale of value he had created for shareholders. Lepard noted that Strategy's market capitalization had grown from roughly $1.4 billion to $52 billion in six years, and that few CEOs in America had delivered comparable results.

Lepard also claimed that the company's performance had 'doubled' that of Nvidia (NVDA) over the same period, saying critics lacked perspective on what Saylor had accomplished before criticizing him for taking some profits off the table.
