Sber Aims to Launch Crypto Trading Infrastructure by December
Russian bank Sber plans to launch its cryptocurrency trading infrastructure by December 1, 2026. The system will allow clients to trade and store cryptocurrencies within a digital depository, with the bank maintaining records of ownership beyond public blockchains.
The depository will process transfers requested by customers using separate active wallets, but it is unclear whether individual blockchain addresses will be provided or if assets will be held in pooled wallets under the bank's control.
Sber has already offered qualified investors structured bonds and Russian digital financial assets linked to Bitcoin, Ether, and cryptocurrency baskets since 2025. The planned depository would extend these systems to cryptocurrencies issued on public blockchains rather than platforms operated directly by the bank.
The Bank of Russia's framework for cryptocurrency trading, custody, and investor access is expected to take effect on September 1, 2026. Existing market participants will have until July 1, 2027 to register and adjust their systems.
