Sberbank Expands Crypto Lending Options with USDT and Ether
Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, is preparing to expand its crypto-backed lending products by adding Tether's USDT stablecoin and Ether to the list of accepted collateral. The move follows a recent proposal from the Bank of Russia to permit these assets for public trading on regulated exchanges. According to Anatoly Popov, Sberbank's deputy chairman, the bank will introduce additional collateral after receiving regulatory clearance.
The expansion is tied to the rollout of Russia's newly regulated crypto market, which is set to begin under a law signed by President Vladimir Putin on August 4. The central bank has proposed Bitcoin, Ether, and USDT for regulated exchange trading based on criteria including market capitalization and trading history. Sberbank's decision to add USDT and Ether as collateral assets reflects its cautious stance towards Russia's digital ruble (CBDC), with the bank's chief financial officer Taras Skvortsov suggesting little evidence of broad demand for the CBDC.
The introduction of USDT and Ether as collateral assets is expected to broaden the options available to borrowers, allowing them to align their collateral with their exposure or business needs. However, the key near-term uncertainty lies in whether and when the Bank of Russia finalizes the eligibility of these assets for regulated venues. Market participants should monitor regulatory updates from the central bank, particularly any steps that confirm which assets become eligible on regulated exchanges.
