Sberbank Launches Crypto-Backed Loans in Russia
Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, is set to launch a loan product that allows customers to use major cryptocurrencies as collateral. This move comes after new regulations from the Central Bank of Russia take effect on September 1, permitting Russian banks to accept crypto assets like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tether (USDT) for securing loans.
The new rules will enable institutions to offer loans to customers while holding their approved crypto assets as collateral, eliminating the need to liquidate those assets. Sberbank's adoption of these changes is expected to spur adoption of similar crypto-backed services among other financial institutions.
Sberbank plans to roll out digital custody and crypto wallet solutions later in 2023, allowing clients to store, safeguard, and interact with their digital assets directly via the bank's digital infrastructure. This development could position Sberbank at the heart of Russia's growing digital asset sector, enabling it to serve individuals who hold cryptocurrencies but lack traditional forms of collateral for bank loans.
