Sberbank Prepares for Crypto Lending Boom under Russia's New Regulations
Russia's largest state-owned bank, Sberbank, is set to accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether's USDT as collateral for loans under the country's new crypto rules. The move comes as Russia prepares to formalize its cryptocurrency regulations, which will take effect on September 1.
Anatoly Popov, deputy chairman of Sberbank's management board, stated that the bank plans to expand its lending services by including Ethereum and USDT as collateral options beyond Bitcoin. The timeline for implementation will align with the Bank of Russia's rules on regulated digital asset trading.
Sberbank completed a pilot loan backed by cryptocurrency mined by Intelion Data, using its proprietary Rutoken storage system to safeguard the collateral. Popov noted that the bank sees potential to offer these secured loans to a broader range of organizations holding digital assets, not just cryptocurrency mining companies.
