Sberbank Prepares to Offer Crypto-Backed Loans in Russia
Russia's dominant banking institution Sberbank is preparing to enter the cryptocurrency-backed lending sector. The bank plans to offer loans collateralized by Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether (USDT) holdings.
The move comes as Russia's regulatory landscape evolves with Federal Law No. 282-FZ set to become effective on September 1, 2026. This legislation establishes disclosure obligations for Russian residents maintaining digital assets on international platforms.
Sberbank has already accumulated hands-on expertise in this domain through an earlier trial program with mining operation AO Intelion Data, which utilized freshly mined cryptocurrency as loan security. The bank aims to modify its current financial offerings once the new legal framework is completely operational.
