Sberbank Prepares to Offer Loans Backed by Cryptocurrency
Sberbank, one of Russia's largest banks, is planning to introduce loans secured by cryptocurrency. The bank currently accepts Bitcoin as collateral but plans to add Ethereum and Tether stablecoin to its list in the future.
The decision comes after Anatoly Popov, Deputy Chairman of Sberbank's Management Board, announced that the bank intends to expand lending secured by digital assets. According to him, the bank will continue to develop this product and accept other cryptocurrencies as collateral once they are allowed for public circulation by the Central Bank.
The new loan product will allow clients to use their cryptocurrency holdings as collateral for traditional bank financing. This means that the client's digital assets will not be used as a means of payment but rather as security for the loan. The loan will be issued according to standard banking procedures, and the client's obligations will be protected by civil law.
It is worth noting that Sberbank already has experience working with cryptocurrency instruments and has been preparing for regulatory updates in advance. After the necessary regulations come into force, the bank expects to adapt its existing products and expand its range of offerings.
