SBI-Ripple Rails Expands Across Japan: Tokenization and Regulated Access Take Center Stage
SBI-Ripple Rails, the partnership between SBI Holdings and Ripple, continues to expand in Japan. This expansion goes beyond just payments, incorporating tokenization and regulated access. The developments span remittances, deposits, and digital asset distribution.
The relationship between SBI and Ripple began in 2016, with SBI holding roughly 9% of Ripple's shares. SBI Ripple Asia is another institutional link between the companies within Japan's financial sector, with SBI Group owning 60% and Ripple holding the remaining 40%. This structure supports continued collaboration across payments and digital financial technology.
The partnership has moved beyond ownership into reported payment and blockchain initiatives. One of these initiatives is a crypto-powered remittance service launched in 2021 using XRP to bridge currencies during international transfers between participating markets.
This service expanded across the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia, with Tranglo handling payouts within the regional payment network. The expansion gives the reported payment infrastructure a wider regional reach beyond Japan.
