Scammers Posing As Law Enforcement Threaten Montgomery County Residents With Cryptocurrency Demands

Residents in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania are being targeted by scammers posing as law enforcement officers. The scammers call from fake phone numbers that appear to be the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and threaten residents with arrest if they don't make payments using Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.

The victims are instructed to deposit funds into a cryptocurrency machine while staying on the phone, which can result in significant financial losses. According to authorities, some victims have lost anywhere from $1,300 to over $23,000 in the scheme.

DA Kevin Steele warned residents that no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever request payment via a Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency ATM. He also stated that no money is involved if there's a warrant issued for someone's failure to appear in court for jury duty or any other reason.

The Montgomery County Detective Bureau is investigating the scam and urges anyone who has received one of these calls not to comply with the demands and report it to them immediately.
