Scams Evolve: Celebrity Endorsements, Cryptocurrency, and QR Codes

Share

Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and individuals need to be aware of common tactics used by fraudsters. According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported losing about $16 billion in fraud in 2025, a 25% increase from 2024. Celebrity investment scams are on the rise, with scammers using fake celebrity images to lure people into bogus opportunities.

Cryptocurrency and QR code scams are also gaining attention, as they can make fraudulent requests appear more legitimate. Cryptocurrency payments can be difficult or nearly impossible to recover once converted from real currency. Mark Jayasatria, Group Manager for Fraud Education at TD, emphasized the importance of verifying information before acting.

To protect yourself from scams, it's essential to be cautious when clicking on unsolicited links, scanning QR codes in public places, and sharing personal or financial information. Legitimate organizations won't pressure you to make immediate decisions or take urgent action.
