Scams Target Nearly Every American, Record Losses Reported
A new investigation by AP and FRONTLINE reveals that virtually every American has been targeted by scammers in some way, according to exclusive polling data.
The study shows a record high surge in scams, with Americans reporting $15.9 billion in losses last year to the Federal Trade Commission, a 25% increase from 2024. The FTC estimates that real losses in 2024 were close to $200 billion, or about $550 million every day.
The investigation highlights the widespread nature of scams and the devastating impact on individuals and families. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend taking precautions when outside, staying hydrated, and checking up on vulnerable relatives and neighbors during heatwaves like the current one in eastern North Carolina.
