Schwab Expands Crypto Offerings with SOL, AVAX, and LINK
Charles Schwab has announced that it will expand its crypto offerings by adding Solana (SOL), Avalanche (AVAX), and Chainlink (LINK) to its platform. This move comes after the company's initial rollout in May, which only included Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). The addition of these three tokens brings the total number of supported cryptocurrencies to five.
The selection of SOL, AVAX, and LINK is telling as it focuses on established projects with distinct roles in the crypto ecosystem. Solana is a blockchain for applications and payments, Avalanche provides infrastructure for blockchain development, and Chainlink connects blockchains with external data and other systems. The company attributed the choice to client demand and stated its intention to add more cryptocurrencies and digital assets over time.
Schwab's approach differs from that of traditional crypto exchanges, where clients can view and trade crypto alongside traditional assets through Schwab's platforms, including Schwab.com, Schwab Mobile, and thinkorswim. This eliminates the need for investors to maintain a separate account at a specialized crypto exchange.
The company charges a fee of 0.75% of the transaction value, which translates to approximately $75 in transaction costs for a $10,000 purchase. Joe Vietri, Head of Digital Assets at Schwab, noted that the goal is for clients to build crypto exposure alongside the investment and banking services they already use at the firm.
