Schwartz Calls for Wallet Reforms to Streamline Stablecoin Payments
Ripple's David Schwartz has called for reforms in wallet design to address issues with stablecoin payments.
Schwartz, chief architect of the XRP Ledger and CTO Emeritus at Ripple, notes that early crypto developers made an assumption about how users would interact with stablecoins, which has led to persistent problems with usability.
The issue lies in the use of 'USD' as a currency code for various USD stablecoins, such as USDT, USDC, and RLUSD. This forces users to manage multiple coin types, disrupting the familiar process of sending and receiving money.
Schwartz suggests re-examining how payment systems handle asset display and settlement, proposing a dual-layered approach. The first layer would define the underlying nature of the asset, such as representing the U.S. dollar. The second layer would let recipients choose which specific issuers to trust, configuring their wallets to accept or reject certain stablecoins.
The XRP Ledger has addressed this challenge through a trust line mechanism, but most mainstream wallets have not implemented it effectively.
