Schwartz Unveils 'Nuclear Briefcase' Strategy for Secure Bitcoin Cold Storage
XRP Ledger co-creator David Schwartz has proposed a novel solution for secure Bitcoin cold storage in response to recent wallet hacks. The 'nuclear briefcase' strategy involves duplicating wallets, separating hardware devices, and splitting passwords among trusted individuals.
The plan aims to reduce the risk of funds being stolen during an owner's lifetime while also addressing the problem of passing digital assets on to heirs. Schwartz highlighted the SecuX W20 as a suitable hardware device for this purpose.
Following the high-profile hack of Coldcard wallets, where over 4,500 addresses were compromised and $89 million in BTC stolen, investors have been reevaluating their storage methods. While some advocates promote returning to paper printouts, Schwartz argues that these are vulnerable to everyday risks such as fire or loss.
Under the 'nuclear briefcase' strategy, two additional wallets with the same 24-word seed phrase and PIN code would be configured on separate hardware devices given to trusted relatives. The PIN code itself would be shared with friends who can only reveal it after the owner's death.
