Schwartz Unveils 'Nuclear Briefcase' Strategy for Secure Bitcoin Storage

The recent Coldcard wallet hack has sparked debate over secure Bitcoin storage methods. David Schwartz, Ripple CTO and XRP Ledger co-creator, proposed a novel solution for protecting cryptocurrency wealth during his lifetime and inheritance.

Schwartz's 'nuclear briefcase' strategy involves duplicating wallets using the same 24-word seed phrase and setting the same PIN code on both devices. He recommends giving one physical device to each of two different relatives, while keeping the PIN code separate with two trusted friends who will reveal it only after the owner's death.

This arrangement ensures that neither the relatives nor the friends can access the funds during the owner's lifetime, but guarantees access for the heirs when needed. Schwartz argues that this approach is better than traditional storage practices and shifts the focus towards human engineering, making the distribution of roles a key tool for protecting crypto wealth.
