Schwartz Unveils 'Nuclear Briefcase' Strategy for Secure Cold Storage

A recent hack of the Coldcard wallet has raised concerns about secure Bitcoin cold storage. In response, David Schwartz, CTO and XRP Ledger co-creator, proposed a novel solution to mitigate these risks. According to Schwartz, the key lies in using a 'nuclear briefcase' strategy, which involves duplicating wallets, separating hardware, and distributing passwords among trusted individuals.

The crisis began after a firmware bug caused Coldcard's built-in generator to produce predictable seed phrases, allowing hackers to drain over 4,500 addresses and steal approximately $89 million worth of BTC. In the aftermath, some advocates suggested reverting to paper storage methods, but Schwartz argued that even these are vulnerable to everyday risks such as fire or theft.

Instead, Schwartz recommends using hardware devices like the SecuX W20 to create a 'nuclear briefcase' strategy. This approach involves configuring two additional wallets with the same 24-word seed phrase and setting the same PIN code on both. One physical device is then given to each of two different relatives, who cannot access the funds without the PIN code.

Additionally, the PIN code is given to two trusted friends, who are tasked with revealing the digits to the relatives only after the investor's death. This arrangement ensures that neither the relatives nor the friends can steal Bitcoin on their own while the owner is alive, yet still allows the heirs to access the funds when needed.
