SEC Approves First Spot Bitcoin ETFs Amid Maturity of Regulated Futures Infrastructure
The decade-long battle for Bitcoin ETF approval has finally come to an end. In January 2024, the SEC granted accelerated approval to eleven US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs, including products from firms like ARK 21Shares, Bitwise, Fidelity, and Grayscale.
This decision marked a significant shift in the SEC's stance on Bitcoin ETFs, which had previously been rejected due to concerns over market manipulation. The approved products include commodity-based trust shares and trust units.
The SEC noted that these exchange applications did not raise any novel regulatory issues. This new era of automation was made possible by the maturity of regulated futures infrastructure.
