SEC Backs CLARITY Act: Landmark Bill Set to Shape U.S. Crypto Market
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is backing the CLARITY Act, which aims to provide clarity on the regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies in the United States. The bill is set to go before the Senate on September 15 and could have significant implications for major assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP.
According to SEC Chair Paul Atkins, the agency's new crypto regulatory framework is the 'most historic step' since its founding. Atkins has outlined a plan to accelerate internal SEC rules governing token issuances and support legislative efforts in Congress. This approach sends a strong signal to market participants who have been waiting for stable regulatory visibility.
The CLARITY Act would fundamentally reshape the rules of the game for the U.S. crypto market, with Bitcoin's status as a commodity being widely accepted but not yet codified by federal law. Ethereum's commodity classification has been questioned by some members of Congress since its transition to Proof-of-Stake, and the bill could settle this debate once and for all.
XRP is perhaps in the most precarious position, with regulatory uncertainty persisting despite a partial legal victory against the SEC in 2023. A federal law clarifying XRP's status as a commodity rather than a security would remove a major structural headwind on the price, potentially triggering a significant breakout toward higher resistance levels.
