SEC Cancels Meeting Amid Clarity Act Concerns
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has canceled its planned meeting to discuss its Reg Crypto rulemaking and innovation exemption, citing concerns over the Clarity Act.
The SEC had announced earlier last week that it would hold an open meeting where commissioners would discuss how companies could fundraise using tokens and eventually get out of SEC jurisdiction if they issue their own digital assets.
The agency was also set to unveil its innovation exemption, which would address how security token issuers can handle underlying securities. However, the meeting was abruptly canceled on Friday, with the SEC citing concerns that any action could further complicate ongoing negotiations over the Clarity Act ahead of the Senate's first vote next month.
The development has left industry participants in limbo, as they had been expecting clarity on the regulatory framework for digital assets. The pause also raises questions about the SEC's ability to finalize proposed rules in time, and whether it will be able to undo any entrenched regulations by a subsequent administration.
