SEC Cancels Meeting on Proposed Crypto Regulations Amid Congressional Gridlock
The SEC has canceled an open meeting scheduled for August 14 to propose new rules for digital asset offerings, citing an 'unforeseen scheduling issue'. The proposal, known as 'Regulation Crypto', aimed to create exemptions allowing certain crypto startups to raise capital without complying with traditional securities offering regulations.
The cancellation comes at a critical time for the crypto industry, which has been waiting for clarity on regulatory guidelines. With Congress unable to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, the SEC appeared poised to use its rulemaking authority to provide some guardrails. However, the lack of a new date for the meeting leaves the industry in limbo.
The proposed regulations would have introduced an 'innovation exemption' and safe-harbor concepts, giving crypto projects breathing room to build before facing full regulatory scrutiny. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has made crypto regulation a central pillar of his tenure, and this initiative was seen as a major step forward.
