SEC Chairman Backs Clarity Act as Bipartisan Bill Gains Momentum
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has expressed his support for the long-awaited Clarity Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at creating a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency market. Writing on X, Atkins stated that he is 'committed to supporting Congress in advancing' the bill.
The Clarity Act has been stalled due to concerns from big bankers and Democrats over stablecoin yields and ethics language. However, an updated version of the bill was introduced last week, addressing the ethics concerns by banning government officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto.
Atkins' support for the bill marks a significant development in its progress. As chairman of the SEC, he has taken a more crypto-friendly approach to regulation compared to his predecessor, Gary Gensler.
The Clarity Act would create a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency market, addressing concerns from lawmakers and industry stakeholders. Major financial institutions like Fidelity and Goldman Sachs have thrown their weight behind the bill.
