SEC Delays Crypto Regulation Amid Ongoing CLARITY Act Uncertainty
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has indefinitely postponed an open meeting that was scheduled to consider proposing new rules for certain investment contracts involving crypto assets.
The cancellation of the meeting, which was set for Friday, comes amid ongoing efforts by Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at establishing a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry.
SEC spokespersons stated that the agency is committed to delivering on the president's agenda to bring certainty to the crypto space, but did not confirm whether they planned to propose measures allowing companies to raise capital through token sales without full securities registration or an 'innovation exemption' for tokenized stocks to trade on blockchains around the clock.
TD Cowen analyst Jaret Seiberg suggested that the SEC's postponement could be tied to waiting for Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, warning that a prolonged delay could cause the agency's crypto rulemaking to drag on and potentially be withdrawn by new leadership in 2029.
