SEC Delays 'Regulation Crypto' Meeting Without New Date, Fueling Regulatory Uncertainty
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has postponed its public meeting to unveil 'Regulation Crypto,' a major rulemaking effort for digital assets, citing an unforeseen scheduling issue.
The SEC had planned to discuss proposing a tailored offering regime for certain investment contracts involving crypto assets during the meeting, which was expected to launch a formal rulemaking process. The new rules could create exemptions allowing qualifying crypto startups to raise capital without immediately complying with the full registration framework applied to conventional securities offerings.
However, the postponement leaves market participants, lawmakers, and the broader crypto industry without a clear timeline for when or in what form the rule will move forward. The SEC's leadership had described the Reg Crypto rulemaking as one of the central points of their digital assets regulatory plan.
The delay comes against a backdrop of stalled congressional action on the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act, which aims to establish separate federal rules for cryptocurrencies and provide a clearer legal framework for companies operating in the space. The Senate has pushed the bill's momentum from Congress toward regulators instead.
