SEC Examines Exotic Crypto and Event-Linked ETFs Amid Rapid Growth
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is reviewing how it approves exchange-traded funds (ETFs), particularly those tied to exotic crypto assets, events, or private investments. The review comes as ETFs have exploded in popularity, with assets growing from over $4 trillion in 2019 to more than $12 trillion by the end of 2025.
The SEC's June 30 request for public comment covers a wide range of topics, including crypto assets, commodities, single-stock products, and event contracts. The agency is examining whether its existing rules provide enough time and authority for staff to assess products with unique economic behaviors.
Crypto assets have played a significant role in the ETF market's expansion, with the SEC's approval of spot Bitcoin products in 2024 giving advisers and institutions a regulated trading venue. However, this has also raised concerns about the complexity of these products and the need for better disclosure.
