SEC Explores 24-Hour Stock Trading Model Amid Growing Demand
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is exploring the possibility of implementing a near-24-hour stock trading model, mirroring the continuous access seen in crypto markets. This shift would allow American equities to operate like their global counterparts, where price discovery happens continuously across jurisdictions.
According to reports, the SEC will hold a public roundtable on September 17 at its Washington D.C. headquarters to discuss the practical and regulatory groundwork required for extended trading hours. The session is expected to cover operational design, market oversight, and how exchanges and intermediaries would maintain 'resilience' in an always-on environment.
SEC Chair Paul Atkins described this shift as 'structural rather than incremental,' emphasizing that US stock markets are entering a new era of day and night. He expects American venues to increasingly align with markets that already operate on a continuous basis, such as those seen in crypto.
