SEC Eyes August 14 Timeline for Regulation Crypto Amid Clarity Act Stalemate
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may move forward with regulating cryptocurrencies despite Congress's stalled CLARITY Act. According to Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan, the SEC could use its existing authority to create rules and exemptions for digital assets.
The SEC has scheduled an open meeting for August 14 to consider proposing a formal 'Regulation Crypto' framework for certain digital-asset offerings. This approach is seen as a 'bypass road' around the CLARITY Act, which needs legislation to pass.
There are three possible scenarios: the SEC formally proposes Regulation Crypto, tokenized securities get a new path through an innovation exemption, or SEC rules advance while CLARITY waits in Congress.
