SEC Hosts Roundtable on Crypto-Style 24/7 Stock Trading Plans
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is hosting a roundtable discussion on September 17 in Washington, DC to explore the possibility of introducing crypto-style 24/7 stock trading. The meeting will bring together prominent players in legacy finance, including Citi, BlackRock, Nasdaq, Charles Schwab, Jane Street, and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
The panelists will discuss various aspects of round-the-clock trading, such as exchange readiness, system resiliency, market impacts, surveillance, cybersecurity, liquidity, and investor protections. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins emphasized the importance of full-time trading in attracting global liquidity while ensuring safety rails.
Several traditional finance giants are racing to build out blockchain infrastructure that supports instant settlements and tokenized collateral characteristic of continuous markets. The NYSE, Nasdaq, and London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) have planned for this, with support from mega banks like Citigroup and BNY Mellon.
