SEC Postpones Vote on Crypto Offering Exemptions Amid Industry Uncertainty
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has abruptly postponed a meeting scheduled for Friday to vote on a proposal known as Regulation Crypto, which would establish a bespoke offering regime for digital asset investment contracts under the Securities Act.
The proposal was expected to provide an exemption allowing qualifying crypto projects to raise capital without automatically triggering SEC registration requirements. The delay comes at a delicate moment for the crypto industry, particularly with the Senate's recess and the uncertain prospects of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.
The SEC has been working jointly with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to develop a taxonomy for crypto assets and additional rules relating to tokenized securities. Under Chair Paul Atkins, the agency has reversed its previous crypto enforcement posture, signaling that most tokens more closely resemble commodities than securities.
