SEC Proposes Blockchain Ledgers as Official Securities Ownership Records
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is proposing to update its rules to allow blockchain ledgers to serve as official records of securities ownership.
This change could simplify the tokenized securities market, where on-chain records and traditional shareholder registers are currently maintained separately.
Joris Delanoue, CEO of Fairmint, a SEC-registered on-chain transfer agent, sees this proposal as recognizing that blockchain is not just a copy of an existing database, but can itself be the official record.
